The port city of Patras, located on the north west region of the Peloponnese is one of the largest cities in Greece, and it's port plays a very important role with travellers arriving from neighbouring Italy.
The city was actually virtually destroyed during the second world war, and was rebuilt. This is why many are confused by the lack of an 'old and ancient' look to the city when they arrive. However, the city is one filled with beautiful places, interesting sights and very friendly locals.
As well as operating ferry links between Greece and Italy, the port also serves a selection of islands in the Ionian. Patras is an ideal base from which one can venture out, and explore some of the other regions of the Peloponnese, such as ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae and many others.
Patras itself has some very interesting events and festivals that take
place throughout the year. The main celebration though is the carnival,
that takes place around Easter, and this is one and the largest carnivals
that takes place in the whole country, and is well worth attending if you
are here during the time.
